Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel reissued a consumer alert on Apr. 7, warning residents about the risks of tax-related identity theft as the April 15 tax filing deadline approaches.

The alert comes at a time when many are preparing their returns and could be vulnerable to scams that use stolen personal information to file fraudulent claims. The issue is significant because it can lead to delayed refunds and financial complications for victims.

“Bad actors will stop at nothing to steal our personal information and hard-earned money,” Nessel said. “With Tax Day just over a week away, it’s imperative that everyone knows the signs of identity theft. The IRS will not make threatening calls or send texts demanding immediate payment. To make sure you receive your refund, stay alert, file securely, and report any suspicious activity to the IRS.” She advised consumers not to give out their Social Security Number unless necessary, ensure electronic filings are done on secure connections, mail paper returns directly from the post office, thoroughly research tax preparers before sharing information, and never send personal details via text or email.

Nessel also reminded residents that the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) does not call or text taxpayers with threats of lawsuits or arrests nor ask for wire transfers or gift card payments. If someone suspects they have been targeted by tax-related identity theft, she recommended contacting the IRS Identity Protection Specialized Unit immediately and following steps such as completing IRS Form 14039 Identity Theft Affidavit.

According to the official website, Dana Nessel serves as Michigan’s 54th attorney general and leads efforts by the Michigan Department of Attorney General in protecting residents statewide through various initiatives including actions against human trafficking and supporting vulnerable populations. The department also focuses on serving Michigan residents through public service programs and policy influence such as drafting expungement laws like Clean Slate in 2019 for expanded opportunities.according to its official website.

The consumer alert includes a public service announcement titled “Don’t Be a Victim of Tax Identity Theft,” which is available for broadcast or online use. Residents seeking more information or wishing to file complaints can contact the Consumer Protection Team using details provided by Nessel’s office.
