Congressman Tom Barrett of Michigan’s 7th District announced on April 10 that he has joined Congresswoman Monica De La Cruz and Congressman Lou Correa in introducing the Improving Medicare Services Act (H.R. 8216). The bill aims to enhance customer service for Medicare patients by requiring the Government Accountability Agency to conduct a study and provide recommendations on wait times, satisfaction, staffing competency, contractor performance, and changes in service quality.
The legislation addresses concerns about the accessibility of Medicare services for seniors. Barrett said, “There is nothing more frustrating than sitting on hold for hours to not get the help you need — especially when the help you need is simply accessing your Medicare.” He added, “Congress needs to take every step necessary to ensure Medicare services and assistance are easily accessible for those who rely on it, and this bill is an important step to fulfilling that promise. I’m grateful to Congresswoman De La Cruz and Congressman Correa for their work on this legislation and look forward to continuing to build a system that puts patients first.”
The last Government Accountability Agency study of the 1-800-Medicare line was conducted over fifteen years ago. Lawmakers say updated information is needed because many seniors depend on these services.
This new bill builds upon six previous health care bills included in Barrett’s plan aimed at fixing what he describes as a broken health care system. The seven-bill package seeks to lower costs by prioritizing patient care over insurance company profits, combating fraud, expanding access to insurance options and health savings accounts, and reducing prescription drug prices.
Barrett’s broader legislative efforts also include proposals focused on restoring trust in government by making it serve people rather than special interests; helping families afford homes; lowering health care costs; recalibrating foreign policy; and reforming campaign finance practices.
