Washington, D.C. — Congressman Tom Barrett from Michigan’s 7th district has announced the passage of H.R. 1, known as the One Big Beautiful Bill Act. The legislation is now headed to President Donald Trump’s desk for signing.

Barrett commented on the bill’s significance, stating, “This morning, I joined my colleagues in passing the One Big Beautiful Bill to prevent the largest tax hike in American history, lower energy costs, and permanently secure our border – all while protecting the integrity of Medicaid and SNAP for those who need them most.” He added that it would “create thousands of good-paying jobs,” benefit the middle class financially, and invest in America’s future.

The bill promises permanent tax relief by making the 2017 tax cuts permanent and includes no taxes on tips or overtime. It also expands several credits such as the Child Tax Credit and Adoption Tax Credit while strengthening paid family leave incentives.

For small businesses and American manufacturing, it aims to cut taxes for business owners and incentivize companies to build factories in the United States. The bill allows immediate deductions for Research and Development expenses.

On border security, it proposes significant investments including building a wall along the U.S.-Mexico border and hiring additional agents for ICE, customs, and Border Patrol.

Medicaid provisions focus on preserving benefits for vulnerable groups while requiring able-bodied adults to engage in work or volunteer activities. It also removes ineligible individuals from Medicaid rolls.

Energy policy changes include reducing gas and electricity costs by increasing domestic energy production and rescinding funds deemed unnecessary from previous acts.

Military investment is also highlighted with allocations for modernizing air traffic control technology and enhancing Coast Guard mission readiness among other measures.

Michigan farmers are addressed with provisions aimed at improving risk management tools for crops and livestock while expanding access to crop insurance.

Barrett expressed pride in forwarding this legislation: “I’m proud to send this pro-growth policy to President Trump’s desk and look forward to the real difference it will make in the lives of people across the country.”
