Damon Bentley, a 27-year-old Detroit resident, was ordered on April 7 to stand trial in Wayne County’s 3rd Circuit Court for charges related to the fatal shooting of a Westland man, according to Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel. Bentley faces one count each of first-degree murder, felony firearm, and carrying a concealed weapon stemming from an incident on May 4, 2025 outside the Grand Lofts apartment complex in Southwest Detroit.
The case has drawn attention due to its serious nature and the commitment expressed by state authorities to address violent crime. “I am relieved that this case will now move forward to trial, where my office will continue to pursue justice for this young man,” Nessel said. “A senseless act of violence tragically stole his future, and we remain committed to ensuring that those who commit such heinous acts are held accountable to the fullest extent of the law.”
Bentley is scheduled for his next court appearance before the 3rd Circuit Court on April 14 at 9 a.m.
According to the official website, Dana Nessel has served as Michigan’s 54th attorney general and leads an office with statewide authority dedicated to protecting residents across Michigan according to the Michigan Department of Attorney General. The department advances social efforts through actions against human trafficking and support for vulnerable populations according to its official website, while also focusing on public service initiatives aimed at serving Michigan residents as stated by department officials.
The department has also influenced policy through legislative efforts such as drafting the Clean Slate law in 2019 which created new expungement opportunities according to its official site.
Authorities remind the public that criminal charges are allegations until proven in court and defendants are presumed innocent unless found guilty.
