The Michigan Department of Natural Resources Parks and Recreation Division said on Apr. 7 that it is closely monitoring water levels in the Mullett Lake Watershed following recent rain, snow, and melting conditions.
Rich Hill, DNR Gaylord District supervisor, said, “We are experiencing very high water levels. All the dam gates are open, and we are passing as much water through the dam gates as we can.”
Officials from the DNR are working with local authorities to manage current conditions. A comprehensive plan has been put in place to keep the public safe if high water persists.
The outflow from Mullett Lake and the Black River feeds into the Cheboygan River behind the Cheboygan Dam before flowing through Cheboygan town and northward to Lake Huron. The DNR has checked water levels at Mullett Lake, along the Cheboygan River, and at the dam over several days. On Apr. 7, officials measured a level of 21.5 inches below the top of the dam.
Recent spring runoff combined with a significant snowstorm and rains have contributed to elevated water levels in the area. Additional rain or snow is forecast for tomorrow.
The Cheboygan Lock and Dam Complex includes both a lock and dam as well as a privately owned hydroelectric facility. The complex is regulated by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission and serves a watershed covering about 1,455 square miles.
