Senator Elissa Slotkin, a U.S. Senator representing Michigan and former representative of Michigan’s 7th district since 2019, addressed current political issues and her priorities for the state in a series of posts on July 23 and 24, 2025.

On July 23, Slotkin commented on the ongoing risk of a government shutdown, writing, “The question shouldn’t be what Democrats are doing. Republicans own the White House, the Senate and the House. If the damn government shuts down, it’s because they couldn’t get their shit together.”

Later that day, she reflected on her first speech as a member of the Senate: “Today I delivered my maiden speech on the floor of the U.S. Senate, a long held tradition for new senators. It’s a love letter to Michigan where we invented the middle class. Protecting the middle class is and always will be my north star.”

On July 24, Slotkin reiterated her commitment to her constituents: “As a U.S. Senator, my highest priority is to help make Michigan a place where the American dream is achievable again.”

Slotkin has been an active figure in Congress since replacing Mike Bishop in 2019 as representative for Michigan’s 7th district. Born in New York City in 1976 and currently residing in Lansing, she holds a BA from Cornell University (1998). Her recent comments come at a time when Republicans control both chambers of Congress and the White House.
