FED Corporation, a contractor based in Michigan, has returned $4.83 million in unused grant funds to the State of Michigan. The funds were originally allocated for the development of Clare Complete Health Park, according to an announcement by Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel.
The grant was first appropriated in fiscal year 2023, with the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) directed by legislation to award it to Complete Health Park, a nonprofit organization tasked with developing a health and recreation complex.
Attorney General Nessel stated, “I am gratified that through our efforts we were able to recover this money for the State of Michigan. My office will continue working to protect taxpayer dollars.”
After receiving the grant, Complete Health Park contracted FED Corporation for development work on the park. FED Corporation received $5,432,298.24 from the grant proceeds.
However, following an investigation into the nonprofit by the MDHHS Office of Inspector General in 2023, the grant was suspended. MDHHS and FED Corporation later reached an agreement resulting in $4,834,201.41 being returned to the state. The Department of Attorney General assisted with negotiating this agreement.
Recovered funds will be deposited back into Michigan’s General Fund.
The Michigan Department of Attorney General serves as the state’s chief legal authority and provides public service and protection for residents through various initiatives such as handling consumer complaints and supporting crime victims (official website). Dana Nessel is currently serving as Michigan’s 54th attorney general (official website).
