Five years after the January 6th attack on the U.S. Capitol, the Michigan Democratic Party criticized former GOP Senate candidate Mike Rogers for promoting unfounded claims about election fraud. The party highlighted that Rogers has alleged a van carrying ballots in Detroit determined his loss in the 2024 Senate race, an assertion a top Michigan elections official called “might be more ridiculous than similar claims made after the 2020 presidential election.”

According to the Michigan Democratic Party, Rogers continues to refuse requests from multiple news outlets, including Detroit News, Michigan Advance, MLive, Gongwer and WLNS, to provide evidence supporting his statements. The party also noted that Rogers has appointed several individuals who have promoted unsubstantiated claims of election fraud as senior leaders in his campaign. Among these are people described as “false electors” who attempted to overturn Michigan’s 2020 election results.

Michigan Democratic Party spokesperson Joey Hannum released a statement: “While Michigan families struggle with rising costs and real economic challenges, Mike Rogers is too busy wallowing in his election loss and peddling the same dangerous lies that fueled the violent January 6th attack on our Capitol. Michiganders rejected Rogers at the ballot box after learning about his record as a Florida carpetbagger who got rich by selling out Michiganders – and this November, they’ll make their voices heard to reject him at the ballot box once again.”

Rogers’ recent actions stand in contrast to his earlier position. In a Washington Post op-ed published on January 5, 2021, he wrote that stolen-election claims were based on “conspiracy and hearsay” and described denying certified election results without evidence of fraud as an “abdication of the higher responsibility to our Constitution.”

The Michigan Democratic Party operates statewide from its Lansing headquarters and focuses on state issues impacting families, seniors, students and veterans while supporting Democratic candidates across Michigan through grassroots activities such as volunteering and educational initiatives (https://limpar.locallabs.com/organizations/5e898181-091e-5fd3-8be8-f5ecee589be3). The organization promotes community engagement by offering opportunities for volunteering and resources for those interested in running for office (https://michigandems.com).
