The Michigan Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity (LEO) was named a Total Worker Health Affiliate by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, making Michigan the first state in the nation to have its labor department receive this status, according to a Mar. 10 announcement.

This recognition highlights Michigan’s leadership in integrating mental health into workplace safety and health strategies, aiming to support workers, strengthen employers, and improve economic outcomes across the state. The designation acknowledges LEO’s Healthy Work Healthy Mind initiative as a comprehensive approach to worker well-being.

“Supporting both physical and mental health for employees is essential to strong families, resilient businesses and a competitive economy,” said LEO Director Susan Corbin. “Michigan is proud to be leading the way in integrating mental health into workplace safety and success.”

LEO Deputy Director of Labor Sean Egan said, “Work has a direct impact on people’s health and well-being. Through Healthy Work Healthy Mind, we’re helping employers create workplaces where workers are supported, safe and able to thrive. Being a NIOSH Total Worker Health Affiliate ensures Michigan’s approach is evidence-based, people-centered and designed to strengthen both workers and businesses.”

Over recent years, LEO has expanded resources for employers through initiatives such as the Learn, Educate, Act, Deploy, Study (LEADS) workplace mental health consultation pilot. Developed with partners including the Corporation for a Skilled Workforce and several universities, LEADS offers research-informed strategies aimed at improving employee well-being and organizational performance. LEO also provides free monthly webinars on workplace mental health topics, coordinates expert speakers statewide, publishes reports on workplace mental health trends in Michigan, and connects employers with tools to reduce stress at work.

The Bureau of Labor and Economic Opportunity aims to broaden economic opportunities and foster prosperity for all residents according to the official website. It serves residents across Michigan according to the official website, providing services in areas such as economic development, workforce training, housing assistance, mobility programs, and unemployment support as detailed on the official website. The bureau operates within economic development and workforce initiatives according to the official website.

The NIOSH Total Worker Health Affiliate Program was established in 2014 to promote collaborations that advance worker safety nationwide. As of January 2026, more than 60 organizations participate as Affiliates.
