The Haslett Public Schools' Board of Education recently addressed the loss of respected community member, Robin Lewis, a meeting that included a statement from, Roger Lewis, her husband.

"I wanted to thank the board and the community for the love and support that my family has felt in my wife's passing," Roger Lewis said. "That means a lot. And I look forward to attending meetings from time to time. And you seeing me carrying the torch for Robin is in the spirit of what she believed in and represented. It's an honor to be here and look forward to working with you."

In the greater Lansing area, Robin Lewis was a well-known community member. Before retiring in 2011, she worked for many years in the health department.

In November 2022, she was elected to serve on the Haslett school board after serving on the Lansing school board. However, one month later, she passed away at the age of 59.

In honor of Robin Lewis, the Haslett school board held a moment of silence at its Jan.9 meeting. They put a plaque and a place at their table, despite her never having been sworn in.

Rather than holding another election to fill the vacant seat, the board plans to appoint a new member. Residents expressed their condolences and put their names forward for consideration at the meeting.

During public comment, the Lewis family also spoke. Her husband, Roger, said the board's support was much appreciated. Her daughter, Rachel, who has served on the Lansing school board for many years, thanked the board for all its hard work and expressed her support.
