Michigan State University has announced the appointment of Marcio Oliveira as the new vice provost for Teaching and Learning Innovation. This decision, effective March 1, 2025, follows a national search conducted by Interim Provost Thomas Jeitschko.

In his new role, Oliveira will oversee academic innovations at MSU. His responsibilities include fostering collaborations among internal stakeholders and external partners. He will lead various initiatives such as Teaching and Learning Success Strategies, the Center for Teaching and Learning Innovation, #iTeachMSU Commons, Online Program Management, and SpartansLearn.

Oliveira is currently serving as assistant vice president of the Teaching and Learning Transformation Center and Academic Technology and Innovation at the University of Maryland (UMD). At UMD, he has been instrumental in advancing integrated strategies that enhance teaching, learning, and scholarly activities across academic affairs and information technology.

“Dr. Oliveira is an innovative thinker and intuitive collaborator who works with and across stakeholders to discover synergies and advance innovations,” said Jeitschko. “Marcio’s substantive experience and visionary leadership will provide a broad spectrum of support for MSU educators as they conceptualize learning, teaching and programmatic opportunities and develop solutions.”

With over 25 years in higher education teaching experience, Oliveira has been committed to promoting engaging pedagogical practices. His work includes designing collaborative learning environments that emphasize educational innovation aligned with student success.

Oliveira's contributions have gained international recognition in fields such as academic innovation, learning analytics, educational technology, and student success initiatives. He has also established partnerships with industry leaders to integrate microcredentials into higher education systems.

“Education thrives at the intersection of innovation and equity, empowering faculty and learners to cocreate the future of society,” said Oliveira. “By fostering curiosity, we shape transformative human-centered experiences where every voice matters and success becomes a shared journey.”

Oliveira takes over from Brendan Guenther who had served as interim leader since August 2023.
