Michigan State University has officially opened its new Multicultural Center, marking a significant milestone for the institution. The center, which was celebrated with a ribbon-cutting ceremony and open house, is the result of over 50 years of student advocacy. Designed with input from students throughout the process, it aims to foster dialogue and serve as a cultural hub on campus.

MSU President Kevin M. Guskiewicz expressed enthusiasm about the new facility: “Today, we celebrate the vision, hard work and advocacy that have brought this beautiful center to life.” He emphasized the university's commitment to creating an inclusive environment where all students can thrive.

The event included remarks from university leaders and offered attendees a chance to explore the center's features and resources. Samuel Saldivar, director of the Office of Multicultural Enrichment and Advocacy (OMEA), highlighted the impact of the center: “Seeing our students engage with the space so passionately is incredibly rewarding.”

The OMEA will manage the new center, having transitioned from its previous role as the Office of Cultural and Academic Transitions. This move aims to expand educational opportunities for undergraduate students while supporting faculty, staff, and graduate students.

Assistant Vice President for Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging Genyne Royal described the center as "a catalyst for student success," offering personal growth opportunities alongside academic development.

The idea for a freestanding multicultural center at MSU dates back to the Civil Rights Movement. Over decades, student groups have advocated for such a space with support from faculty, staff, and alumni. Vennie Gore acknowledged these efforts: “This center is not only a symbol of their perseverance but a promise that their vision for student success...will endure.”

Students played an integral role in shaping every aspect of the Multicultural Center’s design. Vice President Jabbar R. Bennett noted their influence: “Their passion and commitment have shaped...this space.”

SmithGroup was selected to design the building in January 2022; construction began in April 2023 at a cost of approximately $38 million funded through general revenue bonds. The building spans 32,000 square feet with features emphasizing flexibility and inclusivity.

Monteil Crawley from SmithGroup commented on student involvement in crafting its design: "From its prominent yet protective exterior...the design fosters inclusivity."

The new Multicultural Center stands at North Shaw and Farm lanes on MSU’s campus.
