Michigan drivers can now express their support for 4-H youth development through the recent release of the Michigan 4-H license plate. This new plate prominently features the signature 4-H clover and is available through the Michigan Secretary of State. Part of the revenue from each sale and renewal will benefit the Michigan 4-H youth program.
“We are elated that the Michigan 4-H license plate is officially here,” stated Quentin Tyler, director of Michigan State University Extension. He encouraged the Michigan 4-H community to consider contributing to the program by purchasing a plate during their license renewal.
The Michigan 4-H license plate aligns with other fundraising plates in the state. It costs $35, of which $25 supports Michigan 4-H youth development. A renewal fee of $10 will also benefit the organization. Plates can be ordered online, by mail, or in person at any Secretary of State office, with delivery expected in two to three weeks.
“We are thrilled the day has arrived that we can order our own Michigan 4-H license plate,” expressed Andrew Walker, president of the Michigan 4-H Foundation Board of Trustees. The foundation acts as the fiduciary agent for the license plate. Walker anticipates increased visibility for the Michigan 4-H program and additional support for its programs.
In the previous year, Michigan 4-H reached over 137,000 young people through hands-on learning. The program is available in every Michigan county for youth aged 5 to 19, helping participants build confidence, life skills, and a sense of responsibility.
“The Michigan 4-H license plate will benefit our program in many ways, from increased funding to increased awareness,” commented Tyler. He thanked the legislative sponsors, Michigan 4-H Foundation, and the Michigan Department of State for their roles in bringing the plate to production.
Legislation to create the Michigan 4-H plate was introduced in September 2023 by state representatives Matthew Bierlein and Reggie Miller. The bill stipulates that a portion of the sales price goes to the Michigan 4-H Foundation. It passed the Michigan House in November 2023 and the Senate in June 2024, before Governor Gretchen Whitmer signed it into law on July 23.
