Michigan State University has announced the selection of 105 College of Engineering students as Michigander Scholars for the summer of 2025. These students will receive scholarships, with $5,000 allocated for internships or co-ops and up to $10,000 for full-time positions in Michigan, contingent on a commitment to live and work in the state for at least one year after graduation. The total awards amount to approximately $675,000.
This is MSU's third cohort under the Michigander Scholars program, an initiative by the Michigan Economic Development Corporation (MEDC) aimed at retaining talent and bolstering Michigan’s workforce in sectors such as mobility, electric vehicles, aerospace/defense, and semiconductors. MSU collaborates with MEDC to attract and retain future tech leaders in Michigan.
“The Michigander Scholars program is more than a scholarship — it’s a commitment to Michigan’s future,” stated John Papapolymerou, interim dean of MSU’s College of Engineering. He emphasized that students are gaining real-world experience while impacting industries crucial to Michigan's economy.
The 2025 Michigander Scholar awards include:
- 105 Spartan recipients
- Intern/co-op placements offering $5,000 and full-time commitments providing $10,000
- Support for positions in various engineering fields and software development
- Over 148 MSU students have been honored since the program began
- More than 500 scholarships awarded statewide
Participating employers gain early access to skilled student talent through this program while contributing to Michigan's innovation ecosystem. This public-private partnership between Michigan employers and universities aims to retain local talent by ensuring graduates find careers within the state.
