Matt Grossmann, director of Michigan State University’s Institute for Public Policy and Social Research and professor in the Department of Political Science, has been named one of the 26 researchers to join the 2025 class of Andrew Carnegie Fellows. The fellowship includes a $200,000 stipend to support his research on societal polarization and cohesion.
Grossmann expressed his gratitude, stating, “I am honored to be included alongside such a great group of scholars as a 2025 Andrew Carnegie Fellow. This fellowship will support my research on enabling policymaking in an age of party polarization and parity.”
His upcoming project is a book titled “Policymaking for Realists: Bipartisan Progress in a Polarized Age.” It aims to highlight the necessity of bipartisanship in overcoming intense political divisions by recognizing that both political sides are integral to governance.
Jeffrey Conroy-Krutz, chair of the Department of Political Science at MSU's College of Social Science, praised Grossmann's work: “This award is wonderful recognition of the contribution Professor Grossmann has made — and continues to make — to our understanding of some of the most important questions in the study of U.S. politics today.”
Grossmann holds degrees from Claremont McKenna College and the University of California, Berkeley. He is also an accomplished author with several books on political science topics and serves as a senior fellow at the Niskanen Center in Washington, D.C., while hosting “The Science of Politics” podcast.
