After a national search, Michigan State University has appointed Dr. James Hintz as the new vice president for Student Affairs. This announcement follows a restructuring of campus units aimed at enhancing student services.

President Kevin M. Guskiewicz emphasized Hintz's experience and inclusive approach, stating, “Jim is a proven leader with a deep commitment to student success, inclusion and well-being.” He added that Hintz’s leadership style makes him an excellent choice to lead Student Affairs and strengthen the campus community.

The search for this position began in December 2024, following the division of the university’s Student Life and Engagement unit into Residential and Hospitality Services and the Division of Students Affairs. The vice president will report directly to the president, managing student engagement activities aligned with university goals. The role includes oversight of key facilities like the MSU Union and supports health initiatives in coordination with the provost.

Hintz is currently acting associate vice chancellor for Auxiliary, Health and Wellbeing at the University of Illinois. His career includes roles at Purdue University, University of Connecticut-Storrs, and Ohio University. Hintz expressed his enthusiasm for joining MSU: “I am honored to join Michigan State University as vice president for Student Affairs.”

Hintz holds a doctorate in educational leadership from Indiana State University. President Guskiewicz also acknowledged Genyne Royal and Allyn Shaw for their service as co-leaders since December 2024.

MSU utilized Isaacson, Miller along with faculty, staff, and students in their search process. Dr. James Hintz will assume his new role on August 4.
