Michigan State University, Apple, and the Gilbert Family Foundation have marked the graduation of the fourth cohort from the Apple Developer Academy. This program has provided 125 Detroit residents with skills in app development and business, preparing them for careers in the technology sector.

The academy offers a comprehensive 10-month curriculum covering coding, design, marketing, project management, and artificial intelligence. The class of 2025 includes a diverse group of students aged between 18 to 72 years old. Since its inception in 2021, more than 1,400 individuals have participated in various programs offered by the academy.

“Congratulations to the Apple Developer Academy class of 2025,” stated MSU President Kevin M. Guskiewicz. He highlighted the partnership's success in equipping graduates for careers in fields like coding and entrepreneurship. He also acknowledged the Gilbert Family Foundation's role in supporting the academy and facilitating connections between graduates and opportunities within Detroit's economy.

The collaboration between Apple and Michigan State University is supported by the Gilbert Family Foundation, which aims to create opportunities for Detroit residents. The foundation works alongside MSU and partners such as Rocket Companies to help connect learners with local internships and career paths.

Laura Grannemann from the Gilbert Family Foundation noted that “the Apple Developer Academy is creating pathways for Detroiters of all backgrounds to gain skills necessary for tech industry careers.” She emphasized its unique position as a singular program within the United States.

Beyond its initial offering, the academy includes an advanced second-year Renaissance program featuring mentorships and collaborations with local organizations. This includes specialized education through a six-month Operations School program along with software development training provided by MSU Federal Credit Union.

Alisha Johnson Wilder from Apple expressed pride over student achievements at the academy: “There’s incredible innovation coming out of Detroit...coding continues to serve as a bridge between ideas and impact among this year’s graduates.”

Among this year's graduates is Hamza Crichlow who gained recognition as a Swift Student Challenge winner during Apple's annual coding competition. Crichlow transitioned from his previous role as a respiratory therapist to develop Pulmoro—a health care app aiding professionals with real-time treatment recommendations.

Crichlow shared his positive experience: “It’s been cool to see...people learning something together…A hopeful, optimistic view is what it’s given me.” Following graduation, he plans on joining the Renaissance program later this summer.

The academy welcomes all applicants regardless of prior experience; Detroiters can also participate in an introductory four-week intensive course called Apple Foundation Program aimed at teaching app development basics. More information about these programs can be found on their website.
