Sen. Elissa Slotkin, currently serving in the U.S. Congress representing Michigan’s 7th district since 2019, recently used her social media platform to outline her perspective on American security and the need for systemic change within the nation’s intelligence and defense communities.
On September 12, 2025, Slotkin posted: "I’m going to focus on the three big things that, if we get right, will define American security for the next 50 years."
Two days later, on September 14, she followed up with a call for reform: "Let's take this as a moment not to just snap back to the same system we had before, but to rethink how we are organized as an intelligence and defense community. The status quo was not working for the middle class."
Later that day, Slotkin emphasized economic concerns as central to national security: "First, on economic security. We need to treat economic security as a national security priority—because it is. I believe in my bones that the existential threat to the United States is the shrinking middle class here at home."
Slotkin has represented Michigan’s 7th District since replacing Mike Bishop in 2019. Born in New York City in 1976 and currently residing in Lansing, she holds a BA from Cornell University.
