Congressman Tom Barrett has used his social media platform to address the ongoing government shutdown and its effects on federal services, particularly those supporting veterans. In a series of posts made in early October 2025, Barrett emphasized bipartisan efforts in Congress and called for action from Senate Democrats.

On October 3, 2025, Barrett stated, “It’s not as complicated as it may seem. Bipartisan majorities in the House and Senate voted for a clean funding bill to keep the government open. It’s time for the holdouts in the Senate to do the right thing and stop blocking this bill so we can get back to work for the American”.

The following day, he highlighted specific consequences of the shutdown for veterans’ programs: “Critical veteran services, including suicide prevention grants, a program to support rural mental health, and assistance for homeless veterans, expired when the government shut down. Democrats need to stop playing politics and restore support for our veterans.” This post was published on October 4, 2025.

Later that same day, Barrett reiterated his position regarding legislative action: “I voted with bipartisan majorities to keep the government open. Michiganders and taxpayers across America are counting on Senate Democrats to stop their filibuster, end the shutdown, and get federal services back up and running.”

Government shutdowns have historically resulted from disagreements over federal spending bills between political parties or chambers of Congress. During such periods, many non-essential federal operations cease until new funding legislation is passed. Essential services—such as those related to national security or public safety—often continue but may experience delays or limited capacity. Programs serving vulnerable populations like veterans are frequently among those most affected by interruptions in funding.

Barrett represents Michigan's 7th congressional district in the U.S. House of Representatives.
