Detroit Secretary of State office to close for three weeks for renovations

The Secretary of State office at 14634 Mack Ave. in Detroit will be temporarily closed for three weeks starting Monday, Oct. 27, due to a remodeling project. The office is expected to reopen and resume normal service at 9 a.m. on Monday, Nov. 17.

The planned renovations include replacing the carpet, applying new paint, upgrading doors and the drinking fountain, and making other updates to the building.

According to the Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson’s administration, the number of services available online has doubled, allowing most transactions to be completed from a computer, tablet, or mobile phone. Residents can also use self-service stations for instant renewals of license plates, driver’s licenses, and IDs, as well as other transactions. These stations support nine language options. The closest self-service stations are located in Parkway Foods at 11250 E Jefferson Ave. in Detroit and in the Kroger store at 20422 Mack Ave. in Grosse Pointe Woods.

For those who need in-person services during the closure, appointments can be scheduled at alternative offices through Michigan.gov/SOS or by calling 888-767-6424. The nearest offices are at 580 E Warren Ave. in Detroit and 18809 E 9 Mile Rd. in Eastpointe, with operating hours from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekdays, except Wednesdays when they are open from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.
