As the Affordable Care Act (ACA) open enrollment period begins, Michigan residents are facing significant increases in health insurance costs for 2026. According to a report from Bridge Michigan, ACA plan prices will rise by an average of 30% nationwide. In Michigan specifically, individual plans are expected to increase by 16.8%, small group plans by 11.1%, and large business plans are projected to see the largest rate hikes in 15 years.
The rising costs come as tens of thousands of Michigan families will lose access to premium tax credits under the ACA. Estimates indicate that 40,000 families in the state will no longer receive these credits, resulting in fewer people being able to afford coverage. As a result, it is expected that there will be 108,000 fewer Michiganders covered through the ACA marketplace next year and that approximately 64,000 residents may go uninsured in 2026.
Michigan Democratic Party spokesperson Joey Hannum commented on the situation: “When open enrollment begins this weekend and Michigan families see their health care costs skyrocket, Mike Rogers’ fingerprints will be all over it,” Hannum said. “Rogers supported this disastrous health care price hike, he owns the consequences, and Michigan families won’t forget who supported making their health care less affordable.”
