Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel has introduced a new webpage on Extreme Risk Protection Orders (ERPOs), also known as Red Flag Laws, to provide information to Michigan residents about these orders and how they can help prevent gun violence.
The launch of the webpage coincides with the end of Domestic Violence Awareness Month. The ERPO laws, which were passed in May 2023 as part of a series of firearm safety measures, allow civil courts to temporarily restrict individuals at risk of harming themselves or others from possessing or purchasing firearms. Since the law was enacted, several hundred ERPOs have been issued across the state.
“Extreme Risk Protection Orders are vital tools in our ongoing effort to reduce gun violence,” Nessel said. “Whether it’s preventing a potential mass shooting, a suicide, domestic violence, or another tragedy, ERPOs empower families, law enforcement, and others to take action before it’s too late. I hope this webpage will help more Michiganders understand how ERPOs work and feel confident using them to protect themselves and their loved ones.”
The new webpage offers resources for residents to learn about the ERPO process in Michigan, determine who is eligible to file an order, access instructions for filing an order, understand what protections an ERPO provides, and find contact details for local advocacy groups. The page is now available through the Department of Attorney General's website.
