State Senator Thomas Albert and State Representative Steve Frisbie have introduced new legislation in Michigan aimed at honoring U.S. military personnel who died while serving the country.

The proposed bills would make the Honor and Remember flag the official symbol of Michigan’s recognition of fallen members of the U.S. Armed Forces. If passed, the flag could be displayed on Veterans Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, or any other occasion dedicated to honoring military service or individual service members.

Several other states have already adopted similar measures recognizing the Honor and Remember flag, and a federal proposal is currently under consideration in Congress.

“As we prepare to commemorate Veterans Day, it’s important to explore ways to honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice in defense of our freedom and our nation,” said Albert, R-Lowell, a Marine Corps veteran. “We should formally recognize their courage and sacrifice and communicate our unwavering gratitude to their families.”

Senate Bill 703 was introduced by Albert, while House Bill 5283 was put forward by Frisbie.

“Thousands of brave men and women have died in service to protect the revolutionary idea of liberty,” Frisbie said. “It’s an honor to work with Sen. Albert on showing that the state of Michigan will never forget the soldiers who cannot come back home to their loved ones.”

The legislation specifies that only flags produced by Honor and Remember Inc., a nonprofit organization focused on honoring America’s fallen military service members and supporting their families, would be designated as official symbols under this initiative.
