Approximately three miles of Interstate 475 in Genesee County, Michigan, have reopened to traffic following a $141 million reconstruction project. The segment between the Flint River and Carpenter Road was rebuilt as part of the Rebuilding Michigan program, an initiative aimed at improving major roadways across the state.

A ribbon cutting event took place on Friday on the Russel Avenue Bridge over I-475 to mark the completion of this phase. Lt. Gov. Garlin Gilchrist II spoke at the ceremony, stating, “When we fix a freeway, when we repair a road, we make the community safer. We enable more economic possibility, activity, and opportunity. Michigan is going to continue to move and drive forward and this project represents that here in Mid-Michigan.”

The reconstruction addressed both northbound and southbound lanes and included repairs to 19 structures along the corridor, such as building a new bridge over the Flint River. This portion of I-475 supports daily travel for more than 36,000 vehicles and serves as a key route for commercial and commuter traffic.

Work began in April 2024 with construction on northbound lanes before shifting to southbound lanes in December 2024. The roadway reopened to motorists on September 29, 2025.

Looking ahead, further improvements are planned for I-475. A $270 million project will focus on rebuilding the middle and southern segments from the Flint River to Bristol Road beginning in spring 2026.
