U.S. and Michigan flags across the state will remain at half-staff through sunset on November 20, 2025, following the death of former Vice President Dick Cheney. This action is in accordance with federal law and applies to the State Capitol Complex as well as all public buildings and grounds in Michigan.
Dick Cheney died at his family home on Monday, November 3, 2025, at the age of 84.
The state government encourages Michigan residents, businesses, schools, local governments, and other organizations to also lower their flags to half-staff during this period. The recommended procedure for lowering a flag is to first hoist it to the peak briefly before bringing it down to half-staff; the process should be reversed when taking down the flag for the day.
Flags are expected to return to full staff after sunset on Thursday, November 20, which marks the day of Vice President Cheney’s interment.
