Rep. Luke Meerman (R-Coopersville) recently voiced his concerns after House Democrats rejected his LEO budget amendment, which aimed to reinforce the stewardship of tax dollars in Michigan by ensuring funds are not allocated to organizations associated with nations labeled as "countries of concern" by the U.S. Department of State.

In a statement, Meerman emphasized the necessity of implementing precautionary measures to safeguard taxpayer dollars, particularly in light of past incidents like the misappropriation of funds towards the Gotion battery plant. He stated, "As we witnessed with the negligent misappropriation of Michigan taxpayer dollars toward the Gotion battery plant, it is prudent that we install failsafe mechanisms to ensure our dollars are not directed to an entity with ties to one our enemies. That investment should have never happened."

Expressing disappointment in the current budget's lack of enhanced security measures for the SOAR fund, Meerman highlighted the importance of protecting the state from potential threats. He remarked, "The budget that was passed out of our Labor and Economic Opportunity Subcommittee failed to increase security measures for the SOAR fund." Meerman continued to stress the significance of shielding Michigan from dangerous nations that could jeopardize safety and security, reaffirming his commitment to advocating against partnerships with countries of concern. He vowed to persist in advocating for policies that prioritize the proper management of taxpayer funds.
