John James, a Michigan Republican running for U.S. Senate, launched a legal defense fund regarding the election results last month.
James is challenging the results of the election. He ran against Democrat U.S. Sen. Gary Peters, who has held the seat since 2015.
Fox 2 called the race the most expensive Senate race in the state’s history.
James argued that the ballots that were counted late from Wayne County caused voting irregularities.
The Republican National Committee is working with James’ campaign to argue that the voting irregularities influenced the results of the race.
Peters is ahead of James by nearly 85,000 votes. He was the projected winner soon after Election Day.
Dr. Carol M. Swain, a political scientist, tweeted about James’ legal defense fund.
“John James launches legal defense fund as he contests Michigan election results,” she tweeted.
The Associated Press called the election for Peters the day after the election, when, at that point, Peters had surpassed James by approximately 60,000 votes.
The race was previously too close to call throughout the night of the Election and the following morning.
Peters was called the winner after he received 2,734,568 votes to James’ 2,642,233.
James, a combat veteran and businessman, grew up in Michigan and, after returning from Iraq, he took on the family business, James Group International.
