Charlotte Public Schools issued the following announcement on Sept 1.
CUE students learn how to give back change to customers and give back to the community to make positive change
The Charlotte Upper Elementary Resource Room opened a student store almost ten years ago. At the very beginning, the store sold only a few items; pencils, erasers, pens, and journals. The goal was to have the students learn how to give change back for purchases, politely serve the student customers, and if the store profited, to make donations to local charities.
In the years since its opening, the inventory has grown to include Charlotte Oriole caps and bags, a wider variety of writing implements, an assortment of journals, mints, a large variety of erasers, puzzle cubes, and holiday themed items. The number of students making purchases has also grown. From selling items during the first 15 minutes before class to taking as long as 30 minutes, the store has flourished.
Our records show that in the first year, we were able to donate $175.00 to the Charlotte Christmas Kiddies. However, over the last few years, we have donated thousands of dollars to Siren Eaton Shelter, Helping Hands, Pawsibilities, Christmas Kiddies, Backpacks for Kids, and St. Vincent de Paul.
We look forward to continuing our service to the school and the community and thank everyone for their support.
