City of East Lansing Issues Electric Scooter Reminders

Reminder

City of East Lansing issued the following announcement on Oct 15.

With community safety and accessibility in mind, the City of East Lansing is issuing some reminders regarding the use of electric scooters in the community. Scooter users are reminded of the following:

  • There is a speed limit of 10 miles per hour when riding scooters on sidewalks in East Lansing and no more than one person can ride a scooter at a time.
  • It is illegal to operate scooters while intoxicated.
  • All traffic laws, including street signs/signals, must be followed. Use caution at crosswalks.
  • When passing pedestrians, riders should slow down and use audible signals.
  • For rider safety, wear a helmet.
  • Scooters must be parked upright with at least five feet of unobstructed sidewalk for pedestrians and must not interfere with access to the following: vehicle/bike lanes, crosswalks, sidewalk ramps, bus stops, accessible parking/loading zones, fire hydrants, benches, parking spaces/pay stations, access to and from any buildings, bicycle racks, streets, alleys, driveways and within City parking garages and surface lots.

If reported issues are not resolved in a timely manner, community members can also contact the East Lansing Police Department at (517) 351-4220, Option 1.
