Oriole Youth Recreation back up to full speed after Covid shutdowns in 2020

Charlotte Public Schools issued the following announcement on Nov 2.

CPS is eager to see our young athletes return to doing what they do best which is playing and having fun

Charlotte Public Schools is excited to announce that the youth recreation programming is now back up and running at full capacity and local school age students and their families are excited about it. Beginning in the late winter of 2020 the youth recreation department started offering youth camps to fill the void of programming due to Covid related shut downs. The camp format was a great way for the district to offer something for the youth without having to assemble large crowds of spectators and put anyone at risk. The camp format saw over 300 students from DK to 8th grade participate in one of the three offerings that allowed both high school students and coaches an opportunity to work with our youth in basketball, volleyball and wrestling. The camp format went so well that over 65 young Orioles; ages 2-4 participated in a similar camp offering featuring soccer this past fall.

This past spring and summer allowed for more participation in youth sports as we were able to administer our youth baseball and tee ball program which had over 200 participants after missing the entire 2020 season. Additionally, Oriole Youth Recreation sponsored our first ever youth softball program which featured 5 teams that competed and did very well in the Mason Girls FastPitch Softball League. There were two teams that competed in each of the 10U and 12U divisions and another that participated in the 14U age bracket. The summer also included 36 youth athletes who participated in our first ever Summer Track and Field Club. The team practiced twice per week and eventually participated in two full summer track and field meets.

This fall also saw the return to full capacity of our youth cheerleading program. Due to Covid restrictions only 45 girls participated in fall 2020, but this year we saw that number almost double as 95 girls participated in cheering on the CJO youth football teams.

So, with the camp season now in the rear-view mirror, OYR sets its sights on some competition. Beginning this weekend our 4th and 5th grade competitive cheer team will compete in a local cheer league. The return of our participation in the Red Cedar Basketball League also begins this month as 7th and 8th grade girls will begin playing games this coming weekend after two weeks of practice.  The younger athletes will begin practice late in November with games in the early part of December. Registration for boys and girls grades 3-6 is ongoing; please go to www.charlotteorioles.com/community/oriole-recreation/ for more information. Shortly after the start of the new year we will be circulating information about our final winter sport offering which is 3-8th grade Red Cedar Volleyball, a program which has grown significantly over the past few years and has served as a great feeder program for our current middle school and high school volleyball program since 2019.

All in all, the CPS Oriole Youth Recreation program is very healthy and eager to see our young athletes return to doing what they do best which is playing and having fun.
