State Rep. Luke Meerman issued a statement following the House Democrats' vote to pass Senate Bill 911, which aims to use funds from the teacher retirement fund for other projects.

“Democrats aren’t thinking about the long-term implications of this vote. Pillaging public teacher’s retirement accounts to fund frivolous government expansions, and unnecessary programs, is unacceptable. And creates a mess for the next generation to clean-up," said Meerman.

Meerman emphasized that Republicans have focused on reducing pension liabilities and ensuring Michigan's financial stability over the years. “For years, Republicans prioritized paying down pension liabilities and putting Michigan on the path to stability. It is incredibly disheartening to watch it unravel,” he stated.

He also expressed concern over diverting scheduled debt payments for other expenditures. “Interrupting scheduled debt payments to pay for other spending measures is a sign that spending has gotten out of hand and government has gotten too big. It’s flat out irresponsible to gamble with the retirement plans of our hardworking teachers.”
