David Kaufman, a professor at Michigan State University (MSU), has released a new book titled "We Need You in the Locker Room," which provides a personal account of his experiences as the neurologist for MSU football. Kaufman is well-known for his extensive work in neurology and ophthalmology, having authored over 160 publications and holding various roles at MSU, including founding chair of the Department of Neurology and Ophthalmology.

Kaufman's involvement with MSU football began during the "concussion crisis" of the last decade when he was asked to provide insights into sports-related concussions. Reflecting on this transition from clinician-researcher to sports neurologist, Kaufman said, "I love Spartan football and for 25 years I sat in the upper deck of the stadium — hundreds of yards away from the field. I often wondered what it would be like to be on the sidelines."

The book not only shares Kaufman's professional journey but also supports two significant causes. All proceeds will benefit the Foglio Endowed Chair of Spirituality in the College of Arts and Letters and the George Webster Memorial Scholarship in Spartan Athletics.

In an interview on MSU Today with Russ White Podcast, Kaufman recounted memorable moments from his time with Spartan football, including a notable game against Michigan on October 9, 2010. He described how scoring before halftime created an electric atmosphere: "Scoring right before the half against an archrival in a close game — there is no greater motivation!"

Kaufman also spoke fondly of Father Jake Foglio, known as "the Doctor of Soul," who played a vital role within MSU's medical football team. Recalling Father Jake's influence, Kaufman shared how he helped him navigate interactions with players: “Dave, Monroe is a good man as you know... Maybe you can come up with a different phrase to make that small talk with the guys to help settle them down like, ‘Are you good?’ Try that phrase out instead.”

Kaufman's decision to write this book was partly motivated by a promise made to Father Jake before his passing in 2020. The book aims not only to share stories but also to promote safety in football: "Despite its dangers, football is engrained in American culture... One of the reasons I wrote the book was to implore us to seek even more safety in football."

"We Need You in the Locker Room" is available through major retailers such as Amazon and Barnes & Noble.
