Robert "Bob" Burgess, a Michigan State University alumnus and influential business leader, passed away on April 2, 2024, at the age of 79. His passing marks the end of a life characterized by dedication to education and community service.

MSU President Kevin M. Guskiewicz expressed his condolences, stating: “I am saddened by the passing of Bob Burgess and my prayers are with Georgia and the Burgess family.” He highlighted Burgess's commitment to student success and entrepreneurship education at MSU.

Judy Whipple, Interim Dean of the Eli Broad College of Business, described Burgess's impact as unparalleled: “His generosity and work on MSU’s campus has... an enormous impact on student success for generations to come.”

Burgess's contributions extended across various sectors at MSU. Matt Daum from MSU’s School of Packaging acknowledged: “The School of Packaging recognizes Bob's entrepreneurial spirit... an incredible gift of generosity for students now and in the future."

In 2005, he helped establish the Institute for Entrepreneurship and Innovation at Broad College. A decade later, he further solidified its foundation with significant contributions leading to its renaming as the Burgess Institute for Entrepreneurship and Innovation. Ken Szymusiak from the institute noted: “Bob loved supporting students in their pursuit of new ideas.”

Laurel Ofstein from the Burgess Institute remembered him fondly: “Bob Burgess was one of the most humble and caring people I have ever met.” She emphasized his dedication to keeping students' interests foremost in decisions.

Helen Dashney shared her personal reflections: "I’m grateful for all the Burgess family has given to MSU." She valued his mentorship as a treasured aspect of their relationship.

David Washburn from the MSU Research Foundation praised his leadership during challenging times: “The challenges were immense... Bob’s leadership was instrumental in navigating [the Foundation] through that period.”

Born in Brantford, Ontario in 1944, Bob graduated from MSU’s School of Packaging in 1966. His career spanned roles at General Electric, Touche Ross, Plante Moran, and notably Pulte Corporation where he contributed significantly to its growth.

In retirement, his philanthropic efforts continued through initiatives like those with Boys & Girls Club of Phoenix Valley and fostering young entrepreneurs via the institute bearing his name.

His personal life was enriched by outdoor pursuits such as fishing and hunting. His marriage to Georgia lasted over five decades; together they raised three sons who blessed them with seven grandchildren.

A celebration honoring Bob's life will take place in May in Phoenix for local friends followed by another event in July in Birmingham for extended family.
