MSU appoints Mike Yankowski as new chief of police

Mike Yankowski has been appointed as the new police chief and executive director of public safety at Michigan State University (MSU). Yankowski brings over three decades of experience in law enforcement and institutional ethics and compliance to his new role.

Yankowski expressed his enthusiasm for the position, stating, “I am humbled and grateful for the opportunity to help steward and lead one of the finest university police departments in the country. Our time in this noble profession is a gift, and I’m excited about the opportunity to serve in this role. The dedicated members of the MSU DPPS take great pride in keeping the MSU community safe, and I look forward to continuing to build strong partnerships.”

His career includes serving as police chief, captain, lieutenant, and sergeant at the Lansing Police Department. Since 2019, he has also been involved with MSU as an assistant director for institutional ethics and compliance. His background reflects significant leadership skills, strategic oversight capabilities, and a dedication to promoting an ethical environment.

MSU President Kevin M. Guskiewicz commented on Yankowski's appointment: “Mike will be a strong leader as our new chief of police and executive director of public safety.
