Rodney Whitaker and Carmen Bradford, both prominent figures in the jazz world, are nurturing the next generation of musicians at Michigan State University (MSU). Whitaker, a University Distinguished Professor of Jazz Bass and director of Jazz Studies at MSU, attributes his success to several influential Detroit jazz musicians who mentored him. Similarly, Bradford's career took off when she was discovered by jazz legend William "Count" Basie.
Bradford reflects on her early days with Count Basie: “I came off stage and I said, ‘Well, what did you think?’ And he said, ‘I’m going to hire you,’” she recalls. Her career flourished as she became the featured vocalist with the Count Basie Orchestra for nine years. She has performed alongside notable artists such as George Benson and Frank Sinatra.
Bradford joined MSU’s faculty after being impressed by the talent she observed during her visits to East Lansing. “The big bands and jazz orchestras: They blew me away,” she said. Whitaker recruited her to focus on vocal music within the jazz program.
Whitaker is guided by the proverb “Each one teach one.” His mentorship has led former students like Endea Owens and Markus Howell to successful careers in music. He credits MSU’s investment in its jazz program for these successes.
In September 2024, Whitaker was elected into the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. MSU President Kevin M. Guskiewicz praised him: “Professor Whitaker personifies the importance Michigan State places on excellence in arts education.”
Both Whitaker and Bradford continue performing while mentoring students. They will perform at MSU’s annual "Jazzy Little Christmas" concert on December 14th.
