She stated, "With this commitment, the U.S. can now compete in those efforts. Food security is national security, so this is part of a larger effort to reduce our dependence on foreign minerals for fertilizer."

She noted that potash is crucial for fertilizer and highlighted current leading producers such as Russia, Belarus, China, and Canada. Her statement read: "Welcome news! The Dept. of Energy issued a commitment to help Michigan Potash produce fertilizer for American farmers. Potash is an essential ingredient in nearly all fertilizer and currently Russia, Belarus, China, & Canada are leading producers."
