The Michigan 4-H program has formalized a partnership with Michigan State University (MSU) Admissions to enhance career pathways for youth. This collaboration, which builds on a longstanding informal agreement, aims to assist students interested in attending MSU by providing guidance through the admissions process.
Quentin Tyler, director of MSU Extension, highlighted the role of 4-H coordinators in identifying potential career opportunities for young people. "Our 4-H program coordinators in each county really get to know our youth and their families. They are best equipped to see potential career opportunities and guide young people in the appropriate direction," he stated.
Dave Weatherspoon, vice provost of enrollment and academic strategic planning at MSU, emphasized the benefits of this collaboration. "MSU Extension has a vast infrastructure and deep connections in communities and with families," he said. He noted that MSU admissions counselors have established strong links with K-12 schools to reach prospective students early and provide clear pathways to success.
The partnership includes more than a dozen precollege events held annually on the MSU campus, introducing 4-H participants to educational and career opportunities. These events include overnight experiences such as 4-H Exploration Days, Capitol Experience, and Animal and Vet Science Camp.
Jodi Schulz, co-director of MSU Extension’s Children and Youth Institute and state leader for Michigan 4-H, expressed her enthusiasm for the partnership's potential benefits. "I’m a proud MSU alum, and I speak passionately and positively about my experiences here," Schulz said. She acknowledged that college might not be suitable for everyone but stressed the importance of early exposure to different experiences to help young people find their right career path.
