Rep. Elissa Slotkin, a U.S. Congresswoman representing Michigan’s 7th district, recently took to social media to express her concerns regarding potential economic impacts on her state. In a series of tweets, she discussed the implications of proposed tariffs and trade policies.

On January 31, 2025, Rep. Slotkin addressed the issue of a proposed "blanket 25% tariff on *all* imports from Canada and Mexico," stating that such measures "would be bad news for Michigan." The congresswoman provided insights into why this could negatively affect the state's economy "While details are not clear, a blanket 25% tariff on *all* imports from Canada and Mexico would be bad news for Michigan. Here's why ".

Further expanding on potential repercussions, Slotkin highlighted Canadian threats to cut off energy exports from Ontario in retaliation to the tariffs. She noted that approximately "1.5 million Michigan homes are powered by Canadian electricity," warning that such actions could lead to increased costs for these households "Canadian officials have also threatened to cut off energy exports from Ontario."

Slotkin also touched upon the challenges faced by American farmers as a result of previous trade disputes. She mentioned that farmers had not yet recovered market share lost during "the first Trump Administration’s trade war with China," necessitating subsidies to cover lost revenue "Our farmers still haven’t made back market share from the first Trump Administration’s trade war with China."
