Every March, fourth-year medical students across the United States eagerly await opening an envelope that determines where they will undergo residency training. At Michigan State University (MSU), 480 students from the colleges of Osteopathic Medicine and Human Medicine recently discovered their future paths, marking the occasion on Match Day, which occurred on March 26.
The College of Osteopathic Medicine, with more than 700 guests present in Novi, celebrated a 98% match rate. The students matched into 25 specialties, including anesthesiology, dermatology, and family medicine, with 67% remaining in Michigan. Daphne Samuel, from Troy, and Amy Baier, from Allen Park, were among the students who celebrated their match results. Samuel, who matched at Cleveland Clinic, shared, "MSU was a place, for me, that brought so much joy." Baier, who matched in neurology at University of Michigan Health-Sparrow, remarked, "I feel like MSU always broke things down into components."
The College of Human Medicine saw 99.5% of its class securing residency placements, celebrated across eight campuses. Karmyn Vickery, a student from the Upper Peninsula Campus, matched at Corewell Health in Grand Rapids. Vickery expressed, "[This] is the sum of hard work early in the morning and late at night." An impressive 59% of these students will remain in Michigan, with a significant portion entering primary care fields such as emergency medicine and internal medicine.
The Match Day celebrations reflect the hard work and dedication of the students, who are now preparing to embark on the next phase of their medical careers.
