Michigan State University has named G&G Project Sparta, LLC, a joint venture between Gillespie Group and Goldenrod Companies, as the developer for the Spartan Gateway District. The project is described as a public-private partnership that aims to generate positive impacts for the community.
MSU President Kevin M. Guskiewicz stated, “At Michigan State, we are always looking toward the future — a future that fosters robust academic enrichment, encourages intellectual curiosity and supports the community that supports us.” He highlighted the project's potential for academic and economic growth within the community.
The MSU Board of Trustees approved the transformation of the 14-acre site, which aims to serve as a gateway for the university and foster a long-term positive impact. Pat Gillespie, CEO of Gillespie Group, expressed that the development represents a "bold vision for the future of MSU" and described it as “a catalyst for generations."
Aligned with MSU's Vision 2050 framework, the Spartan Gateway District is expected to boost economic activities in the surrounding region and enhance the collegiate experience. Tim Daman, CEO of the Lansing Regional Chamber of Commerce, commented on the project's transformative investment and its potential to "elevate the vibrancy of our community."
The project's plans include the development of a new hotel, retail spaces, and an athletic arena on the west side of the campus. Julie Pingston, CEO of Choose Lansing, claimed that the new venues could attract tournaments, concerts, and events, significantly benefitting the local economy.
The district will be developed in phases, with the first phase involving the arena projected to open by late 2027. Further phases will include housing, office, and retail spaces. Zach Wiegert, managing principal of Goldenrod Companies, emphasized the exciting opportunity to shape the future of the campus and community life.
Gillespie Group and Goldenrod Companies, based in Lansing, Michigan, and Omaha, Nebraska, respectively, bring a mix of local knowledge and national experience to the project.
