Michigan State University has announced the introduction of a new program aimed at undergraduate students in Michigan interested in osteopathic medicine. The Early Assurance Program (EAP) provides a way for students to connect with the university's College of Osteopathic Medicine before formally applying to medical school.
This initiative is part of the Michigan Osteopathic Medical Scholars Program (MI-OMSP), which provides mentorship and interaction opportunities with osteopathic physicians, courses focused on basic clinical skills, and various enrichment activities. MI-OMSP goes beyond traditional EAPs, which typically exist as agreements between medical schools and colleges allowing qualified applicants to bypass certain application processes.
"EAPs are traditionally exclusive agreements between undergraduate programs and medical schools," explained Gerica Lee, director of Pathway Programs for the college. "We are excited to offer the MI-OMSP to all undergraduate students in the state of Michigan who are interested in becoming an osteopathic physician and who meet the program criteria."
Lee further elaborated on the program's goals, stating, "Our goal is to provide students in the new program with opportunities to deepen their understanding of the osteopathic profession and engage with the College of Osteopathic Medicine while maintaining the flexibility to pursue their undergraduate education without limitations. Offering this kind of purposeful, direct mentorship to students across the state of Michigan is truly unique."
To be eligible for the program, applicants must have completed a minimum of 26 credits, maintain a GPA of 3.5 or above, and satisfy additional criteria. Participants will have the opportunity to team with a medical student mentor, attend a summer workshop, and receive advising to enhance their likelihood of acceptance into the Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine program at the College of Osteopathic Medicine.
