Michigan State University's Community Music School-Detroit (CMSD) plays an influential role in the musical development of many in the Motor City. Jauron Perry, who began learning as a young student in the school's Spartan Youth Jazz program, now finds himself on the teaching end, passing on the jazz legacy to new students at CMSD.
"The MSU Community Music School has a profound impact on the city of Detroit," Perry stated, acknowledging the school's strong ties to the local music scene and educational efforts.
The CMSD, located in the MSU Detroit Center in the Midtown neighborhood, offers a range of music education from nursery rhymes to instrument training and composition. Students from all age groups benefit from this comprehensive program, which also provides professional opportunities for local musicians and MSU students.
Aspiring jazz musician Perry benefits from CMSD’s curriculum, guided by Detroit jazz icon Rodney Whitaker. "Getting to know members of MSU’s Jazz Studies program as both educators and performers was vital in my path to Michigan State and pursuing music professionally,” he noted.
Luke Sittard, also a CMSD instructor influenced by the school’s jazz program during his formative years, emphasized the importance of the "each one, teach one" philosophy in jazz culture. He shared that being part of a tradition of mentorship is highly fulfilling for him.
Assistant Director Paola Marquez Smith highlighted the strong community support CMSD builds. "It is so joyful to see young adults who have been through the program come back and help our current students," she mentioned. Her own background includes considerable experience in Detroit's music education programs, which she intentionally chose to remain a part of.
Students and families recognize CMSD’s significance. Grace Sharp, a young harpist, expressed appreciation for the personalized instruction she receives, while Dawn Jack, a parent, shared the positive changes she observed in her children through the program.
For Perry and others, the impact of CMSD extends beyond music. "Investing in music programs is not just about learning music or learning how to play an instrument," Perry said. "It goes way beyond music, and the arts teach us how to approach life positively."
An environment that fosters artistic growth and connection, CMSD remains a key player in maintaining and enhancing Detroit's vibrant musical heritage.
