Today, the House Veterans Affairs Committee approved H.R. 1364, known as the Automotive Support Services to Improve Safe Transportation (ASSIST) Act. This bipartisan bill, introduced by Congressman Tom Barrett of Michigan and Congresswoman Maggie Goodlander of New Hampshire, aims to assist disabled veterans in modifying their vehicles for safer travel by expanding the financial assistance options available through the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA).
Barrett expressed his commitment to supporting veterans: “I introduced the bipartisan ASSIST Act because the men and women who served our country deserve every resource they need to live full and independent lives.” He highlighted that the committee's advancement of this legislation would reduce bureaucratic obstacles and deliver tangible benefits to disabled veterans.
The current VA funding is limited to specific adaptive equipment like wheelchair tie-downs and van lifts. This restriction can prevent veterans from making essential modifications such as ramp systems or mobility device lifts. The ASSIST Act seeks to address these limitations, ensuring that veterans can continue traveling safely.
Goodlander emphasized the importance of supporting veterans: "We have a sacred obligation to ensure that our veterans have the support they need to thrive and enjoy the freedoms they fought for while serving our country in uniform." She described the ASSIST Act as a practical solution that removes barriers preventing veterans from accessing necessary travel equipment.
The committee passed the ASSIST Act unanimously, moving it forward for a vote on the House Floor.
