Senator Elissa Slotkin, a member of the U.S. Congress representing Michigan's 7th district since 2019, recently expressed her concerns over military deployment within the United States in a series of tweets on June 8, 2025.

In one tweet, Senator Slotkin warned against using the U.S. military for domestic law enforcement roles. She stated that "the U.S. military is one of the most trusted institutions in America. Using them at home in law enforcement roles is the fastest way to kill that trust." Slotkin referenced the 1967 deployment of the National Guard to Detroit as an example from Michigan’s history.

She also questioned the motives behind such deployments by stating, "It's hard to make the case that this deployment is about public safety instead of politics, when law enforcement leaders did not request the military to intervene."

Additionally, Slotkin highlighted the intended purpose of American troops by saying, "Our troops are intended by law to protect America from foreign adversaries, never to advance one party's political agenda." She compared this principle with practices seen in other political systems like Chinese communism.

Elissa Slotkin was born in New York City in 1976 and currently resides in Lansing. She holds a BA from Cornell University and replaced Mike Bishop as a representative for Michigan’s 7th district in 2019.
