Today, Congressman Tom Barrett of Michigan introduced the Veterans’ Caregiver Appeals Modernization Act. This legislation aims to improve the Department of Veterans Affairs' Program of Comprehensive Assistance for Family Caregivers. The program is designed to help veterans who prefer home care over hospital stays, ensuring that their families do not face financial burdens.

Barrett emphasized the importance of allowing veterans to stay at home with loved ones willing to support them. He stated, "No veteran who requires a caregiver should ever be forced into a facility when they have a loved one who is willing to support them in the comfort of their own home." Barrett criticized the current system as outdated and broken, causing undue financial strain on families and denying many veterans the option of home care.

The Veterans Health Administration currently lacks a unified digital system for caregiver program applications. Medical records and documents are spread across multiple platforms, leading to delays and confusion. Appeals can take years due to these inefficiencies.

The proposed act seeks to remove bureaucratic obstacles, streamline application processes, and ensure timely decisions for caregivers seeking financial assistance. It also aims to provide overdue financial support for family members who pause their careers to care for their veteran relatives.
