Michigan State University has appointed J Batt as its new vice president and director of intercollegiate athletics. The decision was announced by President Kevin M. Guskiewicz, Ph.D., with the support of the Board of Trustees.
J Batt is currently serving as the vice president and director of athletics at Georgia Tech, a position he has held since 2022. President Guskiewicz stated, "J has an impressive record at several Power 5 schools and an impeccable reputation as a strong and innovative leader."
A welcome reception and press conference are scheduled for June 4 on campus at MSU. Batt's contract will be reviewed by the Board of Trustees on June 13, with his official start date set for the week of June 16.
Batt expressed his enthusiasm about joining Michigan State: “This is truly an amazing opportunity to lead an outstanding, tradition-rich and passionate program." He emphasized collaboration with university leadership and the fan base to enhance Spartan athletics.
During his tenure at Georgia Tech, Batt achieved significant milestones including postseason competition for 14 out of 17 varsity programs, increased athletic fundraising by over 40%, improved academic success rates, and developed new facilities such as The Dr. Thomas A. Fanning Student-Athlete Performance Center.
Tom Izzo, men's basketball head coach and current co-interim director of athletics at MSU, commented on Batt's appointment: “With J Batt’s hiring, President Kevin Guskiewicz has found the right person to lead our department.”
Before joining Georgia Tech, Batt held key positions at several universities including Alabama where he was instrumental in launching a $600 million capital initiative known as the Crimson Standard.
Batt holds a bachelor's degree in journalism from UNC where he was part of the NCAA championship men's soccer team in 2001. He also earned a master's degree in sports administration from UNC.
Batt is joined by his wife Leah and their two sons as they transition to East Lansing.
