The first Pride march took place in New York City on June 28, 1970, marking the anniversary of the Stonewall Uprising. This uprising began with a police raid on the Stonewall Inn, a gay bar in New York City, leading to six days of protests and clashes between law enforcement and the LGBTQIA+ community.

In 1969, homosexuality was criminalized in the United States, and raids on gay bars were common. The events at Stonewall became a catalyst for the gay liberation movement in America. Since then, Pride Month has been celebrated every June as a time for LGBTQIA+ individuals and allies to advocate for equal rights and celebrate their identities.

Alejandra Márquez, an assistant professor of Spanish at Michigan State University who studies gender and sexuality representation in Latin America, discussed how Pride celebrations have evolved over time. She noted that "when Pride first started in 1970, it was much more political," emphasizing its origins as a commemoration of the Stonewall Riots against police violence towards the LGBTQIA+ community. Márquez also highlighted that "trans women and women of color," such as Marsha P. Johnson and Sylvia Rivera, played crucial roles during this period.

During the 1980s AIDS crisis, Pride focused more on public health issues and governmental accountability. By the 1990s, commercialization increased with corporate sponsorships becoming prevalent due to what is known as the pink economy's purchasing power within the LGBTQIA+ community. Márquez observed that this led to some "superficial corporate gestures aimed more at profit than real LGBTQIA+ support."

Currently, there is resistance against commercialization from groups like the Reclaim Pride Coalition that organize marches without corporate or police involvement to honor Stonewall's legacy.

Pride events have expanded globally from major cities to smaller towns across countries including Mexico—where Mexico City is considered an LGBTQIA+ hub in Latin America—enhancing visibility for LGBTQIA+ individuals worldwide.

Márquez remarked on how both U.S. and Mexican Pride celebrations began as activism forms inspiring diverse groups with distinct ideals over time: "The Marcha Lencha" recently emerged differing from commercialized events appealing particularly towards women not fitting traditional lesbian labels.

LGBTQIA+ representation has significantly shifted within mass media offering nuanced portrayals acknowledging intersectionality regarding race or class affecting identity dynamics according to
