Senator Elissa Slotkin, representing Michigan's 7th district in the U.S. Congress since 2019, recently shared a series of tweets highlighting the potential impacts of a proposed bill on Medicaid coverage. Her comments underscore the concerns of constituents who may be adversely affected by changes to healthcare provisions.
On July 2, 2025, Slotkin shared the story of Jennifer from Hillman, who expressed that losing Medicaid coverage would be devastating for her family. Jennifer stated, "Losing our Medicaid coverage would be a hardship that would break us, as we’re on the brink of bankruptcy. If we had to cover my medical copays, I would have to choose between my blood thinners & iron treatments or keeping the lights on."
The same day, Slotkin tweeted about Eileen from Ishpeming, who is concerned about her granddaughters' well-being. Eileen explained that she has full guardianship over three granddaughters and worries about their future without adequate health coverage: "I have full guardianship of three granddaughters. Two are almost legally blind. They would lose vision, dental, and medical coverage."
Later that day, Slotkin urged her followers to take action against the bill before it is finalized in the House. She remarked that history might judge this legislation unfavorably but emphasized that there is still an opportunity for change: "As I said yesterday, history will not be kind to this bill, but it is not a done deal yet. It still has to be passed in the House. So, raise your voices about how it will impact you or your business or your community. Call your representatives. Keep pushing."
Elissa Slotkin was born in New York City in 1976 and currently resides in Lansing. She graduated from Cornell University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1998.
