Senator Elissa Slotkin, who represents Michigan’s 7th district in the U.S. Congress, posted a series of statements on July 17, 2025, addressing recent economic developments in Michigan and criticizing President Trump’s policies.
In her first post at 16:20 UTC, Slotkin commented on the loss of jobs in Michigan due to what she described as economic instability caused by the Trump administration. She wrote, "President Trump’s economic chaos just cost Michigan jobs in a very concrete way: We’re talking a once-in-a-generation development project, thousands of union jobs gone, and an economic sea-change that we were working toward in Genesee County and beyond."
Shortly after, at 16:20 UTC on the same day, Slotkin expressed confidence in Michigan's resilience but criticized federal leadership. She stated, "Despite this setback, I know Michigan’s leaders – from local to state to federal – will dust themselves off and continue to work on bringing more jobs to our state. This was an unnecessary shot to the foot brought on by sloppy policies from the White House."
Later that evening at 20:15 UTC, Slotkin addressed changes affecting Michigan's gaming industry. She wrote, "Michigan has a significant gaming industry that creates jobs and drives tourism. But in order to help pay for President Trump's 'Big, Beautiful Bill,' he hiked up taxes on gambling losses. That’s an important change for everyone involved."
Elissa Slotkin has served as a member of Congress since 2019 after replacing Mike Bishop. She was born in New York City in 1976 and currently resides in Lansing. Slotkin is an alumna of Cornell University with a Bachelor of Arts degree obtained in 1998.
