The Michigan Democratic Party has criticized Mike Rogers for his support of a GOP-backed tax law, which they say has led to higher health care premiums and threatens coverage for many residents. The party claims the law increases health care premiums by an average of 114% for millions of Americans and puts hundreds of thousands of Michiganders at risk of losing their health insurance.

According to the Michigan Democratic Party, Rogers "firmly supported" the tax law that removed $1 trillion from Medicaid funding in order to provide tax benefits for wealthy individuals. The party also states that the legislation did not extend Affordable Care Act (ACA) subsidies, resulting in likely premium increases for most of the 24 million people using the ACA marketplace.

The press release points out that Rogers has stated Michigan’s rural hospitals have “adequate protection” from these cuts. However, the Michigan Hospital Association has warned that several rural hospitals are now at high risk of closure, describing the tax law as “disastrous for access to care for Michiganders.”

Michigan Democratic Party spokesperson Joey Hannum said: “Mike Rogers is campaigning on the GOP tax law that rips away health care from hundreds of thousands of Michiganders and could cause millions of Americans to see their health care premiums increase by 114% on average. Mike Rogers supports the very policies that created this health care crisis and he and his Senate Republican allies bear full responsibility for this government shutdown.”
